Centros para la Atencion
de Violencia Intrafamiliar (CENAVI), a project of Desarollo Intergral
de la Familia (DIF) opens the first government funded domestic violence
shelter in the State of Guanajuato.
CENAVI was developed in response to the 1999 passage of Guanajuato`s
state law on domestic violence, that called for programs promoting
domestic violence community education and prevention strategies,
equality between men and women and the advancement of a human rights
framework advocating a non-violent culture. CENAVI offers a variety
of direct services addressing the needs of battered women and their
children: survivors/victims of domestic violence can access legal
services, medical treatment, individual counseling, support groups
and now shelter services. Additionally, community outreach presentations,
batterers` treatment groups and classes on non-violent parenting
skills/approaches serve as integral components of CENAVI`s anti-violence
prevention efforts.
