the Creator and Mother Earth Joint Project:
Obscure Tropical Paradise #121

Desde hace mucho tiempo he sido un fanático
del grandioso proyecto compartido entre Dios el Creador y la Madre
Naturaleza. Tuve la oportunidad de ver una de sus instalaciones
de arte originales titulada “Inusual Paraíso
Tropical # 121”. El paisaje era increíble,
así como lo era el toque de añadir suficiente selva
para la subsistencia de una pequeña villa. Pero Dios se
superó a sí mismo al poner 3 bahías distintas,
y también la Madre Tierra al poner sus patentados toques
finales. Es como la casa de un soltero, que siempre luce como
tal hasta que finalmente llega una mujer y le pone sus detalles.
Desde cuevas que forman caídas de agua hasta los espacios
para ver el diario final multimedia “Puesta de Sol en Mil
Colores, Series del Océano Pacífico”, la presentación
entera es tan inspiradora como maravillosa. Pero echemos un ojo
cuidadosamente a varias piezas más de toda la instalación.

Obscure Tropical Paradise #121
I have long been a fan of the great joint
project between God the Creator and Mother Earth. Recently, I
had a chance to see their found art installation entitled, “Obscure
Tropical Paradise #121.” The landscaping was amazing,
as was their touch of adding just enough jungle land to support
a small village. But by adding three different harbors, God really
out did himself, as did Mother Earth by adding her patented finishing
touches. Like how a guy’s home will always look like a bachelor’s
pad until it finally gets a women’s touch. From caves acting
as water shoots to several perches to watch the multimedia daily
finale, “Sunset in a Thousand Colors, Pacific Ocean Series,”
the overall presentation is awe-inspiring. But let us take a look
at several pieces more intently within the whole installation.
Dorothy

I first saw Dorothy at Pancho &
Lefty’s bar when Scott Mohoric owned it and it was the most
popular bar in town. It was country or rock n’ roll with
blues nights pretty regularly. It had a small dance floor. It
was a good place for people to meet. One of those rare bars full
of people fun to talk to who had little in common, and everyone
got along, except during the occasional fights. I remember I told
Scott he should put a boxing ring in the back room, I thought
it would discourage fights, and on occasion provide some good
entertainment. So Pancho & Lefty’s had a little of everything
and tonight it had Dorothy.

butaca de mi casa

Mi butaca preferida sigue, y seguirá,
como bola de ping pong entre el balcón y mi sala. Así,
puedo ofrecerles crítica no de uno, sino de¡Dos!
relatos muy cinematográficos: uno provisto por el celuloide
y otro por las ocurrencias y disparates reales, humanos y muy
queretanos. En esta ocasión, compartiré un par de
dramas con ustedes.

porque los nobles individuos de La Jerga me han dado autorización
para beber y hacer emanar el infierno en sus finos establecimientos.
Yo rebotaré por SMA y los alrededores buscando los mejores
bares conocidos y desconocidos por el hombre y el perro callejero.
Mi misión: ayudarte a ti, lector, a salir de la casa con
estilo. En esta primera entrega, la vecina ciudad de Santiago
de Querétaro estuvo bajo el reflector.

Lookout bar staff, because the kind
people at La Jerga have licensed me to drink and raise hell at
your fine establishments. I will stumble around SMA and the surrounding
region to seek out the finest bars known and unknown to man or
street dog. My mission: to assist you, the reader, in getting
out of the house in style. In this first installment the fair
city of Santiago de Querétaro was in the spotlight.

El Cruce de Caminos, una serie de
conferencias relacionadas con el pasado, presente y futuro de
San Miguel de Allende, traerá a más de 75 oradores
invitados, de México y todo el mundo, para hablar de varios
temas. Las conferencias, organizadas por la Presidencia Municipal,
darán inicio el 21 de febrero en el Centro Cultural Ignacio
Ramírez y estarán diseñadas para informar
al público de la historia de San Miguel, su estado actual
y cómo se visualiza su futuro. Además, apoyarán
la meta de que la ciudad alcance el estatus de Patrimonio Cultural
de la Humanidad que otorga la UNESCO. Las transcripciones de las
conferencias serán publicadas y agregadas al expediente
técnico que solicita UNESCO. También estas conferencias
comparten la importante misión de apoyar y fomentar el
turismo cultural en nuestra ciudad.

El Cruce de Caminos, a series of
conferences related to the past, present and future of San Miguel
de Allende, will bring over 75 guest speakers from Mexico and
around the world to lecture on various themes. The conferences,
organized by the Presidencia Municipal, will begin February 21st
at the Centro Cultural Ignacio Ramirez and will be designed to
inform the public on San Miguel’s history, its current state
and how its leaders envision its future. These conferences will
also support San Miguel’s goal of achieving UNESCO World
Heritage status. Transcripts of the conferences will eventually
be published and submitted as part of the technical expedient
that UNESCO requires. The conferences will also share the important
mission of supporting and fomenting cultural tourism in our city.

Sorpresa, sorpresa, hay un restaurante en
el pueblo que se ha mantenido en las sombras a pesar de su íntimo
ambiente y buena comida. Aunque no pude encontrar Chamonix en
ninguno de nuestros directorios telefónicos locales, sé
(gracias a nuestro mesero) que el restaurante se llama así
en honor a un pueblo a las faldas de los Alpes Suizos.
Ana Lilia Galindo es la chef y la propietaria del lugar junto
con su marido y su hermana. La Sra. Galindo dijo que siempre le
había gustado cocinar, pero que recibió su capacitación
‘formal’ en escuelas de gastronomía en España.
Para nuestra sorpresa el restaurante ha estado abierto en San
Miguel desde hace tres años, mientras que nosotros pensábamos
que cuando mucho tendría unos seis meses abierto. Fuimos
porque unos amigos nos dijeron que la comida había sido
una agradable sorpresa, a pesar de la apariencia desolada del
establecimiento.

Surprise, surprise, there is a restaurant
in town that has maintained a low profile, despite its good food
and intimate ambience. Although I can’t find Chamonix anywhere
in our local phone directories, I do know (thanks to our waiter)
that the restaurant is named after a town found at the base of
the Swiss-French Alps.
The main chef is Ms. Ana Lilia Galindo, who also owns the establishment
along with her sister and husband. Ms. Galindo states that she
has always loved cooking, but received her ‘formal’
training in the culinary schools of Spain. To our surprise, the
restaurant has been formally open in San Miguel for three years,
when we thought they had just opened six months ago. We only visited
because friends had told us the food had been a pleasant surprise,
despite the appearance of a desolate establishment.

was me talking to God again sometime in the late morning of 1/1/05.
The sinner’s prayer followed. The same scenario played out
in 100’s of millions of households worldwide as people awoke
to confront the mother of all hangovers. 99% of us sufferers make
a solemn vow to change, never to allow such combos as white Russians,
champagne and margaritas to simultaneously stew in and poison
our guts.

Thrilling World of Cheese Racing
Soon will come the dark time
during the yearly sports calendar. After the Super Bowl, it’s
too early to care about spring training, March Madness is still
over a month away, and no one can bear to watch regular season
NBA games. So the staff of La Jerga would like to offer a new
sport to help will the empty places of your Monday morning quarterbacking.
May we present to San Miguel the great new sport sweeping the
world: Cheese Racing.
