Huerta, El Santo original.

Masks have their origins in our pre-hispanic
culture. They come from ancient traditions long before lucha libre.
And it involves an element of mystery and showmanship that captivates
children and audiences alike. Like our mythical gods or comic book
super heroes, the masks, capes and costumes, are all part of the
grand stage that is the lucha libre.
About eight years ago it was instated that every February 5th, as
historic a date in Mexican culture as well as in popular sport,
there be a special event held in honor of a very special man. This
date, which commemorates the drafting of Mexico’s constitution,
is also shared by the anniversary of the death of one of its greatest
popular icons, stars of the silver screen and cult hero, El Santo.
This year the event organizer and local broadcaster Pepe Baéz
felt compelled to call upon the present holder of that hallowed
mantle, El Hijo del Santo (The Son of El Santo) and institute for
the first time in 60 years of Mexican wrestling (known as lucha
libre) a cup in the name of Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta, the original
Santo.

Cinco
Preguntas con el Hijo del Santo
My
Front-Porch Theory of America
By Otto Reimer
Having the great fortune of growing up in
place that was free and independent of the nothing we called the
creeping American culture in Texas, I can tell you stories about
people in my area that would make Faulkner blush and Roy Rogers
laugh and do rope tricks. But the key to any good yarn is a community
to base one upon, and I’m sorry I would rather look at Dick
Cheney Glamour Shots where he wears a fluffy all be it fun red boa
than listen to any more tales of suburban disturbance. These people
are under the spell of suppression through opulence, whereas the
quality of life is so up to such a level the populace is in fear
of change in fear of losing their mall food courts which daily have
banquets the Romans would have called decadent. But the sacrifice
was a common bond with their neighbors; just because a city has
a name, it is not a town until there are a people.

Survival
of the Witless or Of Integrity and Stupidity
By Keith Keller
Outward-bound training was fun. We jumped
off a tower into a pool, flew dangling by a loop under our armpits
connected to a pulley that ran along a cable high in the air, went
on long mountain treks that we would never have stood for if not
for the fact they were led by a gorgeous young six foot tall Swedish
woman in a pair of tight khaki shorts who humiliated us into keeping
up. We’d have followed those shorts to hell. We learned to
rock climb and repel down steep cliffs. Well, we didn’t actually
climb up very often. We found a path that led around to the cliff
tops, but we got into repelling down. The same Swedish beauty was
the one who coaxed a few of the more reluctant repelers that they
really could drop down several 100 feet through the air down the
face of an enormous dam to a safe and jubilant landing below. We
learned to drown proof. To survive for hours in the water without
treading which I have since taught a number of friends.
Million Dollar
Idea #42
By Stucco Steve Boy have I got a hot deal for you!
How hot you ask? This business idea, if handled and managed properly,
could make the computer industry and the entire worldnetweb thing
seem like a mom and pop country store. I’m talking huge! First,
let’s look at the short list of the current major problems
facing mankind:
1. Depletion of natural resources
2. Wars fought over those natural resources that remain
3. High oil and gas prices worldwide
4. High energy bills, natural gas and electricity
My idea solves all those problems in a jiffy and that’s just
for starters! I can hear you skeptics out there saying What’s
the pitch Stucco? How much money do you want to take us for? First,
this is way out of my league and I wouldn’t have a clue where
to start. But I bet some sharp business mind out there will see
the potential. In fact, glory be to he, I don’t need credit
for this idea. I’ll just be thrilled to see it happen!

Benito Juárez Park exists thanks to
the Chemist and Doctor Ignacio Hernández Macías, who
100 years ago, was the political leader of San Miguel de Allende.
In the area of land, which today is known as the park, there were
once many orchards full of fruits and vegetables, which took advantage
of the water that tumbled down from the natural spring, El Chorro.
Dr. Hernández Macías wanted the inhabitants of San
Miguel to have a recreational area that also served as an environmental
escape. So during the years 1895 to 1904 he bought all of the orchards,
one by one, and following the same layout, created the park. It
was extraordinarily beautiful. The trees, picked when planted, would
abound with leaves once mature. In the two original entrances, at
Diez de Sollano and Aldama (before called Calle del Hospital), there
were cedars already formed in cone-shapes and acacias trees. In
the fields there were alcatraz flowers and in the streets within
there were also sculpted “truenos” trees. There were
also two tanks filled with water, in case there wasn’t enough
from the spring. Where the basketball courts presently stand, there
was originally a field filled with sunflowers and in the middle
a great fountain. The rest of the fountains were built low, the
same way they are preserved today, so the reflection of the water
could be seen.

Qro is dead?
By Don Pappi Chulo
More like Qro has an alive and kickin music
scene, but will only stay that way with the help of fresh talents
such as these kool kats. The “Barcelona Sessions” is
a brand new disk just out, created in the state of Queretaro, Mexico.
I don’t mean to put these guys in “the new Mexican music
scene” category which every one is all a buzz about, but you
are guys, sorry. But that’s alright and not a bad thing cause
the new music coming out of this country is fantastic. The disk
at hand has professional and slick production values by Pepe Amaro
fused with the funk experience of local San Mike favorite Dj Pelusa.
One has to wonder if they can’t take this thing one step further?
In the days we’re livin in with such home music production
programs as Reason and Q-Base, almost every body and their mother
can create a half-ass project and call themselves “musicians”.
On the contrary, these fellas from Qro. are extremely talented and
have a great mix of musical flavorings ranging from trip-hopy funky
house to stuff so electric it would feel like an ice water enema
if you were rolling. And all on this the first disk. I hope they
stick with it and can come up with at least 12 new trax for the
future second album. I would be a real waste if somebody didn’t
pick these guy up on a label for all the world to hear, or at very
least make, like 3 new songs just for me, cause I love it! Yea baby,
yea baby, yea! |
